Making EC formation law by Feb 15 impossible: Law Minister
Anisul Huq said, “There is a need for a law to form the Election Commission (EC). But the term of the current Election Commission is set to end on February 15. It is not possible to make any law for the formation of EC within this period.”
He said, “The Covid situation still exists. The session of Parliament was also shortened due to Covid. It is impossible to make a law by discussing in the parliament in such a short time.”
The minister said EC will be formed through the search committee again. The President forms a search committee after talking to all the political parties.
Highlighting the background of search committee, Anisul Huq said, “No law has been enacted for forming EC so far. In 2012, the president discussed with all political parties how to hold elections. The decision was to form a search committee. A search committee was formed with names from the parties. There were also two elections through the EC formed through search committee.”
He further said, “Elections were held in the country under the caretaker government system, but there was a controversy about the elections later. Now we are talking about search committee. But in the current election commission, there is a person proposed by them (BNP).”
