‘Talks with Myanmar on Rohingya repatriation will continue’

Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen said that talks with Myanmar on Rohingya repatriation will continue despite imposition of military rule in the country.

He also said Bangladesh is keeping an eye on the situation in Myanmar.

The minister said this while talking to reporters on Monday (February 1).

He further said, “Talks are always held with government, not with individuals. The same will happen in case of Myanmar.”

He said, “Myanmar was under military rule in 1978 and 1992. Rohingyas were also repatriated during that period. Talks on Rohingya repatriation will be a priority even if the military ruler returns to Myanmar.”

Earlier, a statement from the Foreign Ministry over the state of emergency in Myanmar said, “Bangladesh strongly adheres to and promotes democratic principles. Bangladesh expects that the democratic process and constitutional system will remain in place in Myanmar. As close and friendly neighbours, we want to see peace and stability in Myanmar. We have been steadfast in developing mutually beneficial relations with Myanmar and working with the country for the voluntary, safe and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas who have taken refuge in Bangladesh. We hope that these processes will continue.

Early Monday (February 1), Myanmar’s military detained top leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the country’s ruling party. A state of emergency has been declared in the country for the next one year following the military coup.
