3rd phase municipal polls held peacefully: EC secretary

Claiming that third phase municipal elections have been held in a fair and peaceful manner, Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Md Alamgir said, “In the third phase elections, approximately 60 percent of votes may be cast.”

He said this while speaking at a press briefing at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon at 7:00 pm on Saturday (January 30).

“Overall, the third phase municipal elections have been held in peaceful manner except two untoward incidents that happened in Jamalpur and Brahmanbaria,” the EC secretary said.

The third phase elections to sixty-three municipalities began on Saturday morning. The voting started at 8am and continued till 4pm without any break.

A total of 3,344 candidates -229 candidates for Mayoral posts, 755 for reserved councilors posts and 2,360 candidates for general councilors posts – are vying in the polls, according to the Election Commission (EC).
