Covid cases decreasing while dengue on rise
Bangladesh reported 35 deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, which is the lowest daily cases detected in the last 99 days. Earlier, 30 Covid infected patients died on June 30. With the latest 35 dead, the national toll climbed to 27,007 across the country so far.
Besides, some 2,074 new cases were reported during the same period. With this, the total number of infections stood at 15,34,440 in the country.
On the other hand, no campaign of the two city corporations is working to control dengue menace. In the last three days, nearly 1,000 got infected with dengue afresh. Most of them are children.
Meanwhile, the pressure of dengue-infected patients is increasing at Shishu Hospital (Children Hospital) in the capital due to the lack of capacity at the dengue-dedicated hospitals. Experts say there is no hope of dengue control this month either.
This is the real picture of hospitals in the last few months. Every day 10-15 children are getting admitted to Dhaka Shishu Hospital with dengue infection. Currently, a total of 67 children are undergoing dengue treatment at this hospital.
Of the six hospitals designated for dengue patients, Mitford Hospital is under pressure of the highest number of patients and then Shishu Hospital.
Doctors say the pressure is mounting because other hospitals do not have the capacity.
Professor Dr Farhad Manzur, a physician of Mirpur Shishu Hospital, said, “More than 10 dengue infected children are getting admitted here every day.
If any child has a high fever, headache, body aches and vomiting, he/she must be brought to the hospital and tested for dengue.
The current dengue situation is unlikely to get under control this month.
Professor Kabirul Bashar, an entomologist at Jahangirnagar University (JU), said, “Aedes larvae breeding will not halt until the rain has stopped. People need to be aware. I do not believe that the outbreak of dengue will decrease this month.”
More than 12,000 people have been infected with dengue across the country this season. So far this year, 54 people have died of dengue fever.
The symptoms of dengue are: high temperature, or feeling hot or shivery, severe headache, pain behind the eyes,
muscle and joint pain, feeling or being sick, widespread red rash, tummy pain and loss of appetite.
What we need to do to prevent dengue
We should destroy mosquito breeding grounds, regularly clean stagnant water in and around containers, flower tubs, plastic containers, discarded tires,
plastic drums, earthenware, buckets, tin cans, coconut shells, coconut garlands, containers, pots, Battery cell etc so that Aedes mosquitoes could not spread.
We should also use mosquito nets while sleeping at night or during the day, establish a healthy environment, use mosquito repellent, spray or coil, use mosquito repellent net on windows etc.
