Bangla Academy Chairman Prof Shamsuzzaman Khan has passed away.

He breathed his last around 2.00pm on Wednesday at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in the city.

He was 81 years.

Poet Pias Mojid, also a Bangla Academy official, confirmed the news.

He was put on life support from April 11.

Shamsuzzaman Khan was an academician, folklorist, and writer. He was notable for editing book series on folk culture of 64 different districts in 64 volumes and collections of folklore series in 114 volumes.

He was awarded with Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2001, Ekushey Padak in 2009 and Independence Day Award in 2017.
