Ten years on, justice eludes Felani murder

Today is the tenth death anniversary of teenage girl Felani, who was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) while crossing in Anantapur border under Phulbari upazila of Kishoreganj.

Felani was killed on January 7, 2011. The girl’s body was found upside-down hanging from the barbed wire fence on the border. India faced huge criticism following the incident.

BSF member Amiya Ghosh who shot the girl was acquitted by the Indian court. Rejecting the verdict, Felani’s family filed a writ petition with the Indian Supreme Court. Later, a trial took place a couple of times over the case. However, the trial still remains unfinished.

Felani’s father Nur Islam said, “We went to many human-right organizations seeking justice in the murder of our daughter but no result found yet.”

“We expect that Indian Border Security Force (BSF) member Amiya Ghosh, who killed Felani, will be sentenced in the Supreme Court and we will get justice,” Felani’s parents said.
