Farmers say that onion has been cultivating in this area for several years. Most of which is as a companion crop. However, farmers do not have much success in cultivating local onion due to a lack of necessary conservation measures.

Extensive grazing area of ​​Tangail Sadar Upazila, Gopalpur-Bhuapur grazing area is growing onion. Due to the high yields in a short period of time, the number of cultivators is increasing. On the other hand, onion prices are rising due to high-profit margins.

Mainuddin, a farmer in Charanchal Duojani village of Tangail Sadar Upazila, said, “For the last three years, I have been cultivating onions as a companion crop. This year’s yield has been very good over the years. However, insect pests do a lot of damage to this crop, for which we have to spray some poison. However, it is not harmful to the human body. ‘

Abdul Kalam Mia, another farmer who cultivates onions with eggplant and chikunga in the area, said, “We are more profitable by cultivating three crops in one land at a time. It is seen that one crop goes up, another remains. Three crops can be grown in one labor. This time I was sowing onions in 5 percent of the land. It costs me like 3,000 rupees. And I have already sold 1 lakh onions. No other crop would have made such a profit. ‘

Another farmer by the name of Majedur said that the cost of cultivating onions in his one and one-half bigha of land, including the laborers, Saras has cost around Tk. And onions sold for Tk 2 lakh. There are still some onions, as well as eggplant, tomatoes.

“We make the land for cultivating onions with seeds and fertilizers in October-November,” he said. Within a month and a half, the yield rises. Then I can sell the eggplant for two months. And then the shrimp will start picking up the eggplant tree. ‘

Another farmer in the same area, named Sujan, said, “On every Bigha land, there are about six manas of onion. When 3 minds are bundled, 3 minds are formed. We grow leafy onions. According to the onion market now, we do not get the price of leaf onions. ‘

“We sell this onion with leaves,” he said. We still do not know if the onion can be made.

Abdur Razzak, deputy director of the farm’s agriculture department, said, “There are four Upazilas in Tangail district. Gopalpur, Bhuapur, Kalihati, Tangail Sadar, Nagarpur area are adjacent to the Jamuna river. The rivers that flow from Jamuna, such as Dhaleshwari, Lohjang, are the tributaries of the rivers every year. And so the farmers of this area cultivate more mixed crops. As part of that mixed crop, they cultivate onions as companion crops of eggplant, chili, tomato, banana, etc. In the middle of the Bhadra month, they sow chilies, sow onions as a companion crop. Apart from this, different crops like coriander leaves, eggplant, sage, etc. are sown on the same land. ‘

He added, ‘The onion grown in this area is usually cultivated as a vegetable. The onions that have been available in the market for the last one and a half months are small in the onion, with leaves as vegetables. Onion targets have been set on about 5 hectares of land in the Tangail area, but about 5 hectares of this vegetable has been cultivated.
