Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President
\nSheikh Hasina today asked the leaders and activists of her party to be united
\nand stay alert to ensure the environment of exercising people’s voting right
\nin the upcoming election, as BNP-Jamaat is there to foil the election.<\/p>\n
“Every leader and worker of AL have to be united, and the people’s right to
\nvote, which we have earned through struggles, have to be ensured. In order
\nfor that right to be guaranteed, the environment must be maintained so that
\npeople can cast their votes peacefully,” she said.<\/p>\n
The premier issued this directive while delivering her address as the chair
\nat a commemorative discussion meeting organised by the AL marking the Jail
\nKilling Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) here in the
\ncapital.<\/p>\n
Mentioning that their (BNP-Jamaat) conspiracy is to thwart the election, she
\nsaid “many hands are behind there to foil the election and they will try in
\nmany ways.”<\/p>\n
“But, our strength is the people, people of Bangladesh,” she added.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina firmly said that Bangladesh will move ahead with the ideology
\nof Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the four
\nnational leaders, adding that “the few miscreants can’t be successful to foil
\nthe election.”<\/p>\n
“None would be allowed to play ducks and drakes with the fate of the people
\nof the country,” she said.<\/p>\n
AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader,
\nPresidium members valiant freedom fighter Shajahan Khan, valiant freedom
\nfighter Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Bir Bikram and Simin Hossain Rimi,
\norganising secretary Mirza Azam, central working committee member Dr Mushfik
\nHossain Chowdhury, Syeda Zakia Nur Lipi, Dhaka South City President Abu Ahmed
\nMannafi and Dhaka North City President Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, also spoke.<\/p>\n
AL publicity and publication secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap and his deputy Syed
\nAbdul Awal Shameem moderated the discussion.<\/p>\n
At the outset, one minute silence was observed to pay tribute to the national
\nleaders brutally killed on this day.<\/p>\n
On November 3 in 1975, four national leaders and heroes of the country’s
\nLiberation War — Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Captain Mansur Ali and
\nAHM Quamruzzaman– were assassinated inside the Dhaka Central Jail.<\/p>\n
The four leaders played a key role in forming the Mujibnagar government in
\nexile, that led the Liberation War in 1971, with Syed Nazrul Islam as the
\nacting president, Tajuddin Ahmad as the prime minister, Mansur Ali as the
\nfinance minister and AHM Qamruzzaman as the home, relief and rehabilitation
\nminister.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister expressed her skepticism whether BNP will participate in<\/p>\n
the upcoming national election as they have the doubt of getting seat after
\nwinning election.<\/p>\n
She said, “If they (BNP) come to election, actually they will participate in
\nit only for nomination business.”<\/p>\n
In this case, the AL chief told her party leaders and activists that
\n“Nomination, we will give it. Because, I don’t sit idle as I will assess (the
\nnomination seekers) every six months.”<\/p>\n
She directed her party men to remove the thinking from their head that “now
\nthey (BNP) are not there, we will win or what will happen if we don’t get a
\nseat? We will get the rest of the seats and form the government”.<\/p>\n
“This thought will bring disaster,” she said, adding, “So, the decision that
\nwill be given (by us) have to be abide by.”<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina also urged her party leaders and activists to create resistance
\nagainst the arsonists in every area in an organized manner, taking the people
\non their side.<\/p>\n
“Now, you will have to build resistance against these arsonists in every
\narea, not only in Dhaka city,” she said.<\/p>\n
In addition, the premier asked her party men to give the protection of the
\npublic lives and property by finding out and handing over the culprits behind
\narson violence (to the law enforcers).<\/p>\n
“If they (BNP-Jamaat) commit such arson violence in a place, you will have to
\nfind out how many BNP or Jamaat men (who are behind it) there and hand them
\nover (to the law enforcers),” she said.<\/p>\n
She said it is the responsibility of her party to ensure protection of public
\nlives and property so that these can’t be damaged.<\/p>\n
“We’ve nothing. We’ve no mentor (Murobbi). We’ve the people of Bangladesh. We
\nwill have to move taking them with us,” she added.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina asked all her party men to be organised in such a manner so
\nthat not a single culprit behind arson violence can be spared. “If anyone is
\ncaught red-handed while setting fire (to anything), then you will have to
\nthrow him into the same fire. The hand that sets fire to anything will have
\nto be burnt. . .tit for tat. If so, they would learn lessons,” she said.<\/p>\n
A minute’s silence was observed at the beginning of the programme to show
\nrespect to all martyrs from the Language Movement, the Liberation War, the
\nAugust 15, 1975 carnage, the November 3, 1975 Jail Killing, the August 21
\ngrenade attack and other pro-democratic movements.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said Bangladesh has developed a lot till now as it has<\/p>\n
been recognised as a role model of development by the world. When the
\npurchasing power of the people of the country has increased and time comes
\nfor a little relief in people’s lives, then they (BNP) feel discomfort, she
\nadded.<\/p>\n
“If people stay good, they feel angry. BNP-Jamaat feels agony,” the premier<\/p>\n
said.<\/p>\n
She continued, “They play ducks and drakes with people’s lives. That’s why
\nthis burning, arson terrorism.”<\/p>\n
She went on saying, “Women and children are not spared from their hands,
\npolice are not spared, hospitals are not spared. Ambulance with patients has
\nalso come under their attack.”<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said that a Jubodal leader wearing attire with writing \u201cpress\u201d
\nset on fire to vehicles, she added that they are trying to fool people. “We
\nhave to protest against their terror activities taking people from all walks
\nof life together because we believe in the power of the people.”<\/p>\n
The AL chief raised question that, “The party who kill people setting fire,
\nwhat politics do they do? Their politics is for whom? Their politics is for
\nwhose interest?”<\/p>\n
The prime minister said that they thought they would reverse Bangladesh again
\nthrough recurrence of incident like August 15 and November 3. “Today, they
\ncouldn’t do that. Today, Bangladesh has moved forward with the spirit of
\nliberation war. That is what they want to destroy,” she added.<\/p>\n
Noting that BNP secured only 30 seats out of 300 ones in the 2008 election,
\nshe said now the position of BNP has become weak for their misdeeds.<\/p>\n
The premier questioned who will be their leader if they run the election.
\n“Who will be made the prime minister? With whom the cabinet will be formed?”
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
She said BNP acting chairman (Tarique Rahman) is convicted in several cases
\nincluding the 10-truck arms haul case and money laundering case. Ziaur Rahman
\nhad given birth to a black sheep.<\/p>\n
“They were directly involved in the August 21 grenade attack. There is no
\ndoubt,” she said, citing several remarks made by Khaleda Zia at that time.<\/p>\n
It is learnt that Tarique Zia earns crores of pounds through gambling and
\nthis gambling is his largest source of income, she said.<\/p>\n
Talking about the jail killing, the AL president said Mostaq (Khondaker
\nMostaq Ahmad) and Zia (Ziaur Rahman) were behind the jail killing as they had
\nbeen behind the August 15 carnage. Following the killings, all the goals,
\nideals and spirit of the Liberation War were destroyed one after another, she
\nadded.<\/p>\n
“Had Ziaur Rahman been a real freedom fighter, why did he ban Joy Bangla
\nSlogan during his regime?” said Sheikh Hasina.<\/p>\n
The prime minister asked her party leaders alongside the other concerned
\nagencies to find out the hoarders of commodities as the government will take
\naction against them.<\/p>\n
“I would like to ask our political leaders as well that the hoarders try to
\ncut the pockets of the people by not marketing the commodities despite having
\nenough goods in their stocks. They will have to be found out. We’ll take
\naction against them,” she said.<\/p>\n
Noting that conspiracies are being hatched in many ways against the
\ngovernment, Sheikh Hasina said there is no shortage of any commodity as the
\nproduction of everything including meat, fish, rice, potato and vegetables
\nwent up significantly in the country.<\/p>\n
“Who are behind these (misdeeds)? They hoard goods, not marketing these. They
\nwould talk against the government, increasing the commodity prices by not
\nmarketing these goods,” she said.<\/p>\n
The head of the government said the production didn’t decline to a slight
\nextent. “We’ve increased the production of everything including potato,
