A Dhaka court on Sunday (October 15) set January 3 next year as the date for submission of the investigation report of the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against 13 people including the Nobel laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, chairman of Grameen Telecom.<\/p>\n
On this day, the investigation agency of the case ACC did not submit the report. For this reason, Judge Asaduzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court fixed the new date.<\/p>\n
On May 30, 2022, ACC Deputy Director Md Gulshan Anwar filed the case at the Integrated District Office Dhaka-1 as the main plaintiff.<\/p>\n
The accused have been charged in the case under Sections 409\/420\/467\/468\/471\/109 and Section 4(2)(3) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012.<\/p>\n
The case statement said that in the presence of the board members of Grameen Telecom including Dr Muhammad Yunus and Md Nazmul Islam, it was decided to open a bank account at the Gulshan branch of Dhaka Bank Limited in the 108th board meeting of Grameen Telecom on May 9, 2022.<\/p>\n
However, the bank account was opened one day before the decision was made. Besides, the bank account opened on May 8 is shown in the settlement agreement, which is practically impossible.<\/p>\n
According to the terms of such settlement agreement and as per the board\u2019s decision, Grameen Telecom transferred Tk26,22,6,780 to the bank at various times. However, the accused embezzled the amount due to the employees before disbursing them.<\/p>\n
A settlement agreement was signed between Grameen Telecom Sramik-Karmachari Union and Grameen Telecom on April 27, 2022 for distribution of dividend due to Grameen Telecom employees.<\/p>\n
The affidavit further states that analysis of the records shows that only Tk1 crore was actually transferred as advocate fee. The remaining Tk25,22,6,780 was embezzled by Grameen Telecom\u2019s chairman, managing director, board members, CBA leaders and advocates of Grameen Telecom through fraud.<\/p>\n
On July 28, 2022, the ACC decided to investigate the board of directors of Grameen Telecom on four allegations of the Department of Inspection of Factories and Establishments.<\/p>\n
