{"id":5948,"date":"2021-03-04T07:46:09","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T07:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jonotarsomoy.com\/en\/?p=5948"},"modified":"2021-03-04T07:46:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T07:46:29","slug":"38-killed-in-anti-coup-protests-in-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jonotarsomoy.com\/en\/2021\/03\/04\/38-killed-in-anti-coup-protests-in-myanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"38 killed in anti-coup protests in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content-details\">\n<p>At least 38 people were killed in anti-coup protests in Myanmar on Wednesday, the United Nations said, in the bloodiest crackdown yet on peaceful demonstrations against a military coup.<\/p>\n<p>Security forces opened fire on people protesting against military rule across Myanmar, a day after neighbouring countries called for restraint and offered to help resolve the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Police and soldiers opened fire with live rounds with little warning, witnesses said.<\/p>\n<p>Describing Wednesday\u2019s death toll as \u201cshocking\u201d, Christine Schraner Burgener, the UN\u2019s envoy on Myanmar, said in New York there were \u201cnow more than 50 people [dead] since the coup started and many are wounded\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She cited weapons experts who examined video footage that appeared to show police using 9mm sub-machine guns to fire live ammunition at people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw today very disturbing video clips. One was [showing] police beating a volunteer medical crew; they were not armed,\u201d Burgener told a virtual briefing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother video clip showed a protester was taken away from police and they shot him from very near, maybe one metre. He didn\u2019t resist his arrest and it seems he died on the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The envoy said about 1,200 people have been detained in Myanmar since last month\u2019s coup and many families do not know their health condition or whereabouts.<\/p>\n<p>Myanmar has been in chaos since February 1 when the military detained elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and much of the country\u2019s civilian leadership, and seized power in a coup d\u2019etat.<\/p>\n<p>The military justified the takeover with unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in the November 2020 election that returned Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s National League for Democracy (NLD) to power in a landslide.
