Agriculture Minister. Md. Abdur Razzak said, \u2018People all over Bangladesh are looking at agriculture in times of crisis. If there is no food, none of us will survive. This is why everyone tells me – I am the Minister of Agriculture, everyone is looking at me. But you have to answer a lot. ‘<\/p>\n

The Agriculture Minister made the remarks after handing over the keys of two rice harvesting machines to farmers at Shanghai Haor in South Sunamganj Upazila of Sunamganj on Wednesday (April 29) morning and distributing gifts given by the Prime Minister among the farmers.<\/p>\n

He said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given utmost importance to agriculture. Because Bangladesh was once a country of food shortage, a country of famine but now there is no shortage of food in Bangladesh. ‘<\/p>\n

The minister added, “People around the world are terrified today because of the corona virus. Initially, it started in China, but now there are corona infections in all countries of the world. There have been lockdowns in many countries, factories have closed, transportation has stopped, shops have closed.<\/p>\n

In other words, there is an extreme stagnation in the economy. In the midst of this economy, agricultural production in particular will decline. This can lead to food crisis. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization has already said there could be famines in many countries. So it is very important to harvest paddy in our haor area at this time. ‘<\/p>\n

“Our main crop is paddy, but this boro paddy is very risky,” he said. I have seen for many years that due to heavy rains, floods occur here in advance, floods destroy the paddy of the entire haor area. We have seen in 17 and in 11 we have seen many tragic incidents happen twice during the tenure of this government. If we lose this paddy, it will have a huge impact on production across the country.<\/p>\n

For this we have engaged with the farmers with utmost importance. Last year, farmers did not get the price of boro paddy. That is why they were angry with us. This year, we have started buying paddy from farmers from April 27 at a fair price.<\/p>\n

There will be no irregularities in the trade of this paddy. No middleman will come. There is no chance to come. We have compiled a list of small and marginal farmers from the Ministry of Agriculture. There will be a lottery on that list. No one will be able to influence that lottery. ‘<\/p>\n

Shamima Shahriar, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Md. Hasanuzzaman Kallol, Director General of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Md.
